Sykes shows podium potential on World Superbike debut

RIZLA SUZUKI’S Tom Sykes made a stunning World Superbike debut at Brands Hatch during round 10 of the Hannspree World Superbike Championship, finishing race two in seventh after retiring from third during race one due to a stone-hole in his radiator.

Sykes got off to an excellent start in the opening race and settled comfortably into fourth position. On the opening lap he was pressuring multiple World Champion Max Biaggi when a stone fired through his radiator holing it - forcing him to retire nine laps later while in third place.

The gritty 22-year-old put this behind him in race two and dug deep trading places once again with Corser and Championship leader Troy Bayliss. He was running as far forward as fourth place until the latter stages of the race eventually finishing a solid seventh.

Sykes and his Rizla Suzuki team will be in action again next weekend at Knockhill in Scotland for the eighth round of the Bennetts British Superbike Championship where he intends to consolidate his third place in the title chase.

Tom: “I have had an excellent weekend at Brands Hatch mixing it with the World Superbike regulars. The fans really got behind me and every time I came over the line I got a big cheer. I want to say a huge thank you to the Rizla Suzuki team for all their hard work; I’m thrilled with what we have achieved. It was a superb opportunity and I have enjoyed every moment of it plus I have learned a lot from the other riders. I am now looking forward to Knockhill next weekend where I hope I can pick up from where I left off at Oulton Park.”

Jack Valentine, Team Manager: “I’m over the moon with how the weekend has gone. Tom did a great job and held his own on track amongst the World’s best – I’m very proud of him. He and the Rizla Suzuki team have shown that they can perform at World level even when using a lower specification British Superbike engine. I’ve been impressed with how hard everyone has worked this weekend; we have all enjoyed the experience.

“I was gutted for him in race one but to compete for a podium position at World level really is an achievement. He is a very talented rider and that has shone through when it needed to, now it is back to BSB duty at Knockhill next weekend.”

Sykes ninth in World Superbike debut qualifying

RIZLA SUZUKI’S Tom Sykes showed raw ability and speed during the opening day of the 10th round of the World Superbike Championship at Brands Hatch in Kent, qualifying in a competitive ninth place, just half a second away from pole position.

The Huddersfield based wild card rider wasn’t fazed on his World Superbike debut by the plethora of stars that were on track alongside him as he knuckled down to work his way through the Pirelli tyre combinations available this weekend. He took the challenge to the regular World Superbike riders, grabbing a top 10 placing and putting in consistent lap times throughout the day.

His Rizla Suzuki worked well on the arduous 2.3-mile undulating Kent circuit as his team already had a good set-up from previous British Superbike rounds. With 1sec covering the top 15 riders, Sykes has a tough weekend ahead but is confident there is more to come. Ryuichi Kiyonari, the reigning British Superbike Champion, was fastest.

Second qualifying and Superpole takes place on Saturday 2nd August. Race day is Sunday 3rd with race one at 1200 and race two at 1530. British Eurosport will broadcast live from 1100-1700 or you can watch on line at -Click Here-

Tom: “That was a decent session and I’m quite happy with the set-up, we need to make a few little changes as the World Superbike tyres have different characteristic to the BSB tyres. I want to be able to use more of the potential grip on the rear. I’m only 0.5secs off so it isn’t the end of the world and I’m happy with our race tyres.”

Jack Valentine, Team Manager Rizla Suzuki: “That was a pretty good first qualifying session. We’ve spent time on our race set-up and working through the available tyre combinations, some of which we haven’t tried out previously. We have a few chassis changes to make to the Rizla Suzuki which will help the front hold the line when Tom is on the gas. I’m really pleased so far as we are running consistent times and have good race pace. On ideal times Tom would have been seventh, there isn’t much in it. I know we can improve and Tom will step up again tomorrow and challenge for the front row.”

Do you use A537 -

An eight mile (13km) stretch of road in Cheshire is Britain's most dangerous road, according to a survey.

The Road Safety Foundation pinpointed the single-carriageway A537 between Macclesfield and Buxton, known as the Cat and Fiddle.

Since 2001, it has seen 43 fatal or serious collisions, nearly three-quarters involving motorcyclists.

The position comes despite the introduction of crash barriers along the road by the county council.

When motorcycle collisions are removed from the figures, the A537 moves to become one of the safest in the country, the foundation said.

The "undulating, bendy" A61 between Barnsley and Wakefield which suffers "poor forward visibility" tops the table, without bike accidents being taken into account.

Design factor

The Road Safety Foundation's Dr Joanne Hill said: "The fact that the A537 tops the list of Britain's most dangerous roads highlights the fundamental issue of road-user behaviour when it comes to safety.

"However, poor road design and inadequate safety measures on the majority of the roads in the list are responsible for a high proportion of the fatal or serious collisions each year."

Persistently higher risk roads are concentrated in the north of England and the Midlands, the research found, and motorways and main roads were highlighted for concern.

The most improved road was the A453 from the A38 to Tamworth, Staffordshire, which saw an 88% drop in fatal or serious collisions over six years.

The foundation said traffic lights, speed limits and extra pedestrian facilities had helped.

New campaign highlights lasting damage of Drink Driving
The lasting impact of drink driving is highlighted in a new THINK! campaign launched by Road Safety Minister Jim Fitzpatrick.
The £1.6m summer campaign with new radio adverts emphasises that a drink drive conviction stays on your licence for 11 years - affecting your job prospects and serving as a constant reminder of the 12-month driving ban you received for driving while over the limit.

Jim Fitzpatrick said:
"Drink drivers put themselves and others in serious danger, but getting behind the wheel after drinking can have a devastating impact on your life even if you avoid a crash. You'll get a minimum 12-month driving ban and a large fine - and the record will stay on your licence for 11 years.

"As the weather gets warmer we all want to be out enjoying ourselves and might end up drinking when we hadn't planned to, but that doesn't mean we have to drive home. If you've had a drink use public transport or take a taxi - otherwise that quick pint might end up lasting 11 long years."

The new THINK! adverts highlight just how long a drink drive conviction stays on your licence by pointing out what else you will do in the 11 years. For example:
* Your heart will beat 400,000,000 times
* You'll breathe enough air to fill 20 hot air balloons
* You'll eat enough potatoes to fill 6 phone boxes
* You'll drink 36 bathtubs full of water
* You'll climb enough stairs to ascend Mt Everest twice
* You'll sweat enough to fill 1,612 fish tanks.

As well as the new radio adverts and in-pub advertising the summer drink drive campaign features TV and cinema advertising and a partnership marketing campaign. It runs from June 2 to August 10.
